3 or 4 day photo trip starting from Houston USA
« on: June 25, 2015, 11:07:12 pm »

Guy's

I will be in Houston from the 17th to the 23rd October and want to stop over for 3 or 4 days to get in some photography. I am initially thinking Cuba but wondered if any of our American friends or anybody really have any other ideas..............I enjoy street and Landscape photography.
I just looked online and cant find flights out of Houston to Cuba I guess due to the embargo...........
Anyway I also looked at Yosemite national park but that's a 4 hour flight plus a 4 hour drive and accommodation in the park is frigging expensive, so really needing some local knowledge on what and how to shoot that park (for those that know me I like to drive shoot drive shoot again).

3 years ago I went to New Orleans after a similar trip and had a fantastic time there but I have done that now so want to try somewhere else.

Another idea seeing as I don't mind driving is to rent a car in Houston and drive shot drive shoot and drive some more maybe someone can recommend a 4 day round trip with photography in mind

As always any tips or advice will be much appreciated

Maybe consider heading west straight across Texas. Make Marfa, TX your destination. 600 miles.....

The terrain is vast, and beautiful. Its a unique place, even for Texas.

Since you enjoyed New Orleans and want to go to Cuba I'm guessing you like street and architecture photography. You could take a plane to Mexico and then to Cuba - that's the way most photographers I know do it. You get a visa for Cuba right in the Mexican airport (Cancun or Mexico City).
San Antonio can be interesting if you've never been there.
For landscape I'd head for the Davis Mountains and Fort Davis. The drive to Big Bend will be long, but if you have the time...
Good luck.

You might also like the Bandera/Fredricksburg area of Texas. About 250 miles from Houston, it's called the "Hill Country" of Texas and is also known as the cowboy capitol of Texas. Beautiful scenery and lots of cowboy activity around Bandera and Fredricksburg has some nice architecture as well as a lot of German immigrant influence. Boerne is also a nice town not far from Bandera and has a very distinct German influence, the main street is named Hauptstrasse.

Austin for street, arch., music, football, and food.
Gruene, then San Antonio for street +architecture
Lost Maples state park for foliage colors.
Then back towards Houston along 90A or the parallel rds to the north side of I10. German and Czech.
Check out Texas Highways magazine archive for "spots" and photos.
There is the Missions trail across the same general coastal area. Search for Texas historical driving tours of landmarks.
Good time of year to visit !
Plenty of fall festivals then.

If you have never been to a rodeo

Bryan TX is very close to Houston.
This would probably be quintessential Texas.  Nothing like a Texas county fair and rodeo.
