IMHO both shots look a little tonally flat for a black&white (at least on my monitor).

I agree. Fifty shades of grey, but no blacks or whites.

Normally I would agree but in this instance I think they are fine. Nice lady.

Oh they're beautifully done, but I just like some more contrast in my monochromes. As you say, maybe not appropriate in this case, but I'd like a bit more contrast.
