Glenn Highway
« on: May 26, 2015, 02:07:09 am »

I had the opportunity to visit Alaska this Spring. Even though I didn't get to visit Denali, I spent a day on the Glenn Highway and boy, it was beautiful. I am still curating the shots from the trip, but here are three shots that I would love to hear your feedbacks.

Since this is my first trip to Alaska, there were a few things that caught me off guard. First, the weather was treacherous and could be stubbornly stable. I had a few shots where I could not get any texture on the sky. It was a little annoying. Secondly, having to shoot from the highway pull-outs make it a little difficult to get a different perspective on things. The shot at Mile 76 (DSC_1453) is classic. I wish I could get a different perspective on this very beautiful scene. But I figure out that the only way to do it is probably going rogue down the slope or renting an airplane to get its aerial view. I could not afford either at that time since I was traveling with family and did not have a lot in the bank account. Maybe, Alaska is a place that you have to go by yourself and make the trip only to shoot pictures. Thoughts?

I like the depth in your images and the processing is first class. Well done.

Good shots, and yes, often it is frustrating, for keen photographers, to be limited by some situations or circumstances.

An excellent set of photos… I second stamper's comment about the depth.

Thanks! I guess #3 doesn't have as much depth of field as it should; I am not sure if it adds or detracts from the image. I am thinking about layers and shape juxtaposition when composing for the image.

Jeremy and David, thanks! Yeah, I like the first one, too. I am still looking at the image a little closer to see if there is anything else I can do in post to make the image stands out more. I hope I am not too heavy handed with some of the dodging and burning.

You don't go completely by yourself into the forest in Alaska.  You bring your trusty shotgun maybe named "big bertha" for hungry bears... Of course depending on where you go, Andrew Skura did his Yukon trip ultralight with a packraft, might have even been winter... ish.  But that man is very experienced, wasn't lugging any photography equipment, moving fast, and could be slightly insane.

All a shotgun will do to a Grizzly is piss him off. .44 Magnum, maybe. I am headed up that way next summer so these shots justserve as bait to whet my appetite.

LOL. Maybe somebody could crowdfund a tripod that can double as a rifle. I'd be down for that.

You mean, a three-barrel shooting platform?
