Looks like EOS-numerique was basically right.

But what I noticed (apart from the camera being a decent 20D MkII), is that there appears to be a new lens in town:

EF 85mm 1:1.2 L II USM

Yes, that's right, a mark II of the 85mm lens.

Is that droolworthy or not?

It looks like a good camera to me.

Despite the fact that it is all the rage for everyone to shoot RAW all the time under all circumstances the Picture styles are a nice upgrade.

The picture styles on the 5D work extremely well, it's really hard for me to justify the extra time to shoot RAW personally, as after experimenting with the picture styles I can get 99% of the same picture in much less time by letting the camera create a JPG for me with the right picture style.  The only advantage AFAICT to shooting raw is slight sharpness increases, which only matters on the absolute sharpest of pictures anyway.  (Studio, on a tripod, technique 100% correct, etc..)

I also think RAW images processed by DPP at least are more likely to show noise then images processed by the camera.

If you end up with one give the picture styles a serious look.   e.x. people are often using raw as a crutch in tough exposure situations.  But if you choose the faithful style the camera does an amazing job of capturing lots of dynamic range and rendering tough lighting conditions well.  The spot meter will obviously help here as well, this is a big step for Canon as they've finally moved the spot meter a bit further down the line, something that has always been annoying about Canon as opposed to Nikon.

The 5D is so pleasant to use, they've really nailed the user interface, this new 30D should be just as pleasant.  They have also made this camera look like the overall UI is almost exactly the same as the 5D, down to button placement and everything.  That should be very helpful for people who shoot with both a 30D and a 5D.

The Direct print button is obviously a funny joke though.  I've never used it on my 5D.  Maybe some other market like Japan has been clamoring for the Direct print button.

How does the use of RAW make a difference with sharpness?

Oh, and the 17-55 f2.8 IS looks remarkably interesting.  If you don't mind EF-S lenses.

Raw makes a difference in several ways:

- Render to a non-compressed image format - no jpg compression ever

- Definite potential for larger amounts of correction & processing of the image if you didn't capture the correct exposure/color, etc..

The thing is the picture styles give you far greater control in the camera then in the past as they adjust the curve the camera uses to create it's rendering of the RAW file.   And the options have dramatic effects.

I am just not seeing the need to use RAW all that much.  I just went on vacation last week and shot RAW + JPG the entire time.  If I chose the right picture style and took a good picture I am having a real hard time finding a reason to tweak the RAW file rather then just using the JPG the camera produced.

The only thing I think they should add is the numerical slider that adjusts the tone curve.  It's in DPP, it has 8 settings or something like that.  Each picture style uses a different value for that parameter.   You can adjust the parameter freely in DPP, but you can't in the camera.   It'd be nice if the custom picture styles allowed you to choose that value.   (Instead they just let you define a tweak based off an existing picture style)
