Matte Fine Art - scratch / smudge protection
« on: May 13, 2015, 04:47:02 am »

Hi there!  :D

We are printing books using Canon IPF on 100% matte papers including matte cotton rag papers (Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 310 for example)
They are truly beautiful but there is a drawback - ease of scratching / smudging.

For our semi glossy papers we use sprays which add some protection against ink transfer on to facing pages.

But from our experience fully matte paper will suck as much solvent based laquer as we spray on it
and after several coats it changes dmax and the print is not really protected.

We have tried lamination but it's a PITA to apply without trapped dust and it just defeats the purpouse of fine art paper which is to be able to touch it.
We have tried canvas varnishes but they are milky and change the print too much and they don't really protect it.

I've heard of wax method but I think it will not work if applied with a cloth. Maybe some hotmelt HVLP?

The only thing that comes to my mind is some sort of substance that is hardened by IR and creates some sort of matte crusty layer on top of the paper.

Any ideas ?
