Installing printer software on iMac for Epson Pro 3880
« on: May 03, 2015, 03:32:02 pm »

I expect a new Epson Pro 3880 soon and want then to make sure to install relevant software only. Certainly no software I have no use for.
I have selected Pro 3880 software as listed hereunder and I would very much appreciate to read your advise regarding this software I plan to install on my iMac OS X 10.9.5

List of software I plan to install:
1) Apple Common Updater v1.0 - Aug 29, 2014
2) Driver v9.33 - Oct 23, 2014
3) Mac OS X Common Updater v8.0 - Oct 12, 2011
4) Firmware vP0079C - Mar 09, 2010
5) Color Base v2,65 - Dec 02, 2014
6) Uninstall Center v1.2.8 - Sep 30, 2014
7) Epson LFP Remote Panel v2,50 - May 12, 2014
8) Epson Print-Plug-In v1.22 - Apr 25, 2013
9) Several icc profiles for the Epson paper I plan using

Special questions I have:
a) I wonder especially whether it will be necessary to install the Firmware vP0079C?
I have read that doing so could have an unwanted impact on e.g. the functioning of the chips on the cartridges, e.g. that these no longer can be reset to full? But perhaps installing firmware once might be necessary?
b) Is it useful to install Color Base v2,65?
c) Is it useful to install Print-Plug-In? I use LightRoom for all my printing.

Thank you for your advise!

Well, I think most of us just put the disk in the drive, or double-click the dmg file, and then let the installer load the files it's supposed to.

Can I ask why you're trying to parse the various files and components?

Sorry I don't have any insight into what you're asking.  But I'd surmise that a partial install would probably raise more issues than whatever its perceived benefit(s) might be.

Personally, I simply download the most recent driver from Epson...no need to do all the other gyrations except perhaps the firmware update.

Install the latest driver from the website and LFP Remote Panel software.

Use LFP Remote Panel to update the firmware.

Install any colour profiles you want.

ColorBase might be of use, but if you don't know how/why/what/when - you should wait.

Never install anything to do with Apple auto updating Epson large format printer drivers.

The latest driver for OSX is 9.33 and can be obtained from http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02/DriverDownloadInfo.do?LG2=EN&CN2=&DSCMI=31842&DSCCHK=119ea444253f66d5dfba1b48db7b2bbf7f83f698 - you won't need the various updaters.

@Jager
Joe:
Just using the CD that comes with the printer is what I did in 2009 when I installed my Pro 3800.
"Thereafter I never managed to get the Epson LFP Remote Panel" functioning, not even with the not so good help of Epson Support.
In addition the files you get in this way, are often already replaced by newer software.
You do also get a lot of files in your system that are never used.
By selecting the latest drivers etc. from internet I know for sure that I am not using outdated software.

Thank you Phil for your advise!
I have some most likely not so clever questions regarding installing firmware, confirming that I am not a software specialist!
1) Is it absolutely necessary to install firmware?
2) If I understand you well then I should not install "Apple Common Updater v1.0" and "Mac OS XW Common Updater v 8.0"?

the firmware probably doesn't need updating since it should come from the factory w/ the most current firmware.  You can see the version on the nozzle check page.

Since you say you're not a software guy, I'd *strongly* suggest just downloading the v9.33 driver and be done w/ it.  You're planning on adding lots of unnecessary stuff and the printing system is 'brittle' enough w/o adding old unneeded stuff.

Any ICC profiles for Epson papers come w/ the driver.

Howard, I agree with your advise. Best to keep things simple.
Do you know whether the Epson LFP Remote Panel is installed when installing the driver 9.33?
If not I think that I should then install this LFP Remote Panel too?

You should install remote panel - it's not installed with the driver.

The updaters do not need to be installed.

Driver will install basic profiles - if you have custom ones or third party paper ones, you'll need to install them.

Firmware - use remote panel to update - if you already have the latest, it will do nothing.  Firmware updates for Epson large format printers are generally very worth while updating when available.

I think you are overthinking this. I generally install the CD and then do whatever updates it says are needed. Only if that doesn't work would I start the the autopsy.
As for not updating firmware. Why? If they put out a firmware update then it probably needs it.
The printer is not coming from the factory. It is coming from a distributer who may have had it sitting on the shelf for years.

Apparently with the 1430, if you let the system perform updates for you automatically, you will not be able to use non-Epson carts. It performs some magic to verify the cart but this seems to come in an update after the initial install. AFAIK, this is only on the 1430, but I wouldn't be surprised if Epson tried to do it on the new printers.

Consider following the instructions that ship with your printer.  Read them all the way through before you insert a CD and start clicking.  The 3880 install process is very straightforward, a little less so if you plan on a network install.

Jeff - there are no Epson printers that prevent third party ink usage.  They may warn you about it, but they will never stop you.
