Hi folks -
Yesterday I was out shooting with the 24-70 and while wiping rain off the front element I noticed that there was some give to the lens barrel. I don't remember noticing this before, and I use the lens pretty hard so I wanted to check if anyone else has seen this before I drop the thing in to get serviced. It still works fine, focus and zoom are OK, no aberrations I can see.
The wobble is a slight side-to-side movement when the lens is at 24mm, with the barrel fully extended. You can rock the extended part maybe a millimeter or two in either direction along a single axis.
Anyone seen this?

I've developed a similar problem on my Minolta 24-85 , but it's 15 years old. As far as I can tell, there is no distortion in the pictures. I still use it as my primary lens on a 7D and it functions as well as it did through 4 generations of film bodies.

I've got a 24-70m and like it. It wobbles slightly, but not so much that ever post a thread about it. Rather the annoying zoomcreep which renders it useless on certain long exposures from a tripod.
I've brought some of my lenses to Canon for adjustment of mechanical parts. You might want to do that. I know your problem so well: I'm I obsessing or are my totally expensive lenses crap? And who can you ask - nobody.

My cheapie 28-105 F/4-5.6 Canon zoom wobbles a lot. The outer part can move a couple of millimeters side to side with a gentle finger push, but it seems to spring back ok. I would certainly have to be careful not to bump it during a long exposure, but otherwise it takes surprisingly sharp pictures (for its price point). My L lenses do not wobble, and I would be quite annoyed if they did. I'd ask Canon to check it out.

I had noticed the same type of looseness in my 28-70/2.8L after many years of use. It didn't seem to affect anything so I ignored it. But I recently used this lens in a dust storm and it picked up LOTS of internal dust. So a few weeks ago I sent it to Canon for cleaning and they themselves noted (without prompting) that the "front barrel is loose". Anyway received the lens back in A-1 condition -- the lens was only out of my hands a week and a half, but did cost $158 labor + $15 return shipping.

Is the 28-70mm L not a sealed lens? Is the 24-70mm L ? I shoot in dust storms, too

Unlike the 24-79, the 28-70 was NOT sealed.
