Title: Canon CR2 on ipod?
Post by: Klaus W. Saue on December 30, 2005, 11:40:34 am
hi all,

i'm on a 1D II and a 5D. father christmas has thrown a 60 GB ipod plus photoadapter down my chimney. as i only shoot RAW, i was shocked to find out the ipod doesn't support this format, only jpegs. preview on my imac can handle RAWs, so i assume it's a minor software issue. any ideas?

thx in advance,

klaus

i have an iPod photo as well. So far, the firmware won't support any RAW viewing. It's possible in the future that Apple will add support for it. It still stores RAW files, however, and for me that's enough... because I use it mainly for my music, and on occasion I'll use it for extra raw storage on vacation. If I was really intent on having a RAW viewer/storage device, I would probably pick up an Epson P-2000 digital wallet, or something.

cheers, oldcsar, may be it's possible to download images from my imac, i haven't tried yet, as this is not my intent. i'd rather use my ipod when travelling, viewing images isn't  the issue, just storing them. i have an image tank, but the ipod is so much smaller, and it provides double capacity. i insist it's only a minor software update which could be easily accomplished. i spoke to an apple technician today, he was aware of my prob, but had no clue whether or when. anyway, my ipod refuses to accept  RAW data from any of my cams. do i have a settings prob?

My RAW files are CRW, from the Rebel. I'm not sure if the CR2 format was out when they introduced the iPod photo, but I presume they've added support for it since then. Have you tried the iPod updater? Go to Apple's support page and download it. You should try the latest firmware if you don't already have it, which is 1.2, I believe. To see what version of firmware you have, check on your ipod. It can be found under the Settings, or About option, as far as I can remember. You might even want to use the iPod updater to reset your iPod to factory settings, then maybe even retry updating the firmware. If there are any software issues, that could solve it.

You also might be able to rule out any hardware problems by connecting someone else's digicam, etc, to the iPod + camera connector... see if it'll download other RAW formats from their camera to your iPod.

that's all i can think of for now.

good luck Klaus!

it finally works. as expected, i can't view the images, but they can be downloaded from the ipod into bridge. the downside is that the ipod doesn't accept a card reader and 5D files, and it takes quite some time to transfer the RAWs from my DII. i do believe this is a software issue that should be fixed by apple.

thanks very much for your kind support.
