Title: Repair Time for 24~105 f4L IS?
Post by: David R. Gurtcheff on November 29, 2005, 12:16:44 pm
I have one of the recalled 24-105 lenses. I emailed Canon with all the data, and received a reply that they would send me a mailing pre-paid label. Once Canon receives the lens, what has been your experience with turn around time? I'm trying to plan when I send it to coincide when I don't think it would be a hardship not having it.
Thanks
Dave

David, I don't know what your experience has been, but I have been using this lens extensively - took over 2000 shots with it in the past six weeks, and I think I have seen flare on about 4 photos, in situations where you would normally expect to get some flare no matter what the quality of the optics. So (1) I'm not sure what the fuss is about, and (2) Canon has said nothing about the cause of the so-called problem, correspondingly nothing about what kind of repair they will do, and nothing about what level of technician and quality control procedures will be adopted wherever it is being fixed. I think Canon should address these concerns, especially as they have been raised already.

Coming from the school of "if it ain't broke don't fix it", and I am so pleased with the resolution and contrast from this lens, I am loathe to have it tinkered with until I learn more about the above. All of this of course is "up-stream" of the issue about how long they will hold it once we send it there.

Thanks, Mark:
I must admit, I have had no problem with flare issues so far, but have not really used it in a situation where flare would be a problem. Now I'm having second thoughts----you raise some really good issues.

I've had this lens for over two months and neither have I noticed any flare problems (I wasn't looking for it particularly). But a friend of mine has: http://www.ec-photo.com/418037-1/WI2V3692.JPG (http://www.ec-photo.com/418037-1/WI2V3692.JPG)

I went to Canon's Hong Kong service centre and got my EF24-105/f4L IS (batch number UT0801) exchanged for one manufactured in batch UT1000. Canon simply unscrewed four screws holding the back plate with the serial number and put it on the new lens. The whole thing took less than one hour while I waited.

I can't complain about this level of service.

According to something canon UK let slip to the guy working in my local pro store; there is a small part in the lens that canon forgot to paint black. Certainly feasable.

I'm sure its feasible - the question is how much dis-assembly they need to do to get at it, who does it and whether/how they verify that it comes out at least as good as it went in for all other performance aspects. If it really is as simple as changing a back plate fine, but I would like Canon to come forth themselves and tell us the details of what is involved. It shouldn't have to be on a "let slip" basis. What's the big deal and why the need for all the secrecy?

Well, we weren't supposed to know, but it's actually an old Soviet weapons system component that they forgot to conceal enough.  If you shoot at f/11 for exactly 34 seconds on bulb the lens detonates.

I hope it produces quite a bang for the buck.

Same reason why doctors do not admit to their malpractices, why teachers hate to say "I don't know" and why you hate to fumble a ball in football. Because it makes you look more stupid than you already do for having to do a complete lens recall.

The more rumours I hear the more I want some solid information from source. Time to get on Canon's case about this and demand some real answers.

Canon UK have had my lens for 2 weeks now, been on the phone a couple of times, the first time got told the parts not in yet. Explained that I had previously phoned and been assured the parts would be in, still no joy, today I got a letter from Canon stating that thier carrier had been unable to deliver. Turns out they decided to change the number of the house I live in to one that does not exist. so another call to Canon and it was my 100-400 that was in for calibration they had been trying to return and still no parts in for the 24-105.
Not overly impressed as I am hearing that the lenses are available from several well known stores
So much for Canon CPS
