Title: raw processing????
Post by: mgts517 on October 04, 2005, 04:48:37 pm
Hi,
 I'm alittle new at this ,so,please be patient...
I'm shooting a raw image..process it threw canon file utility,adjusting color,contrast,exposure etc...
save the file as a 16 bit tiff...then open it in photoshop to sharpen.
In unsharp mask,my settings are
amount=400
radius=1
threshold=5

My in camera parameter settings are Parameter 1.
My problem is that the images are all pixelated,seem to be oversharpened.
 Am I correct in assuming,that being that my in camera settings are +1,that the images are already sharpened.and that my unsharp mask settings should be lowered?
I'm using a Canon 300D.
Any help woud be appreciated.
TNX,
Mike

If you are shooting RAW, your parameter settings on the 300D are not applied to the image.  Try reducing your sharpening amount.  I use Photokit sharpener--so I forget what USM settings I used to use... but 400 seems high.

Thanks Steve,
For quick reply...I will take your advise & try somw different settings.
I spent over an hour at your website,you are a very talented photographer...with a tremendous eye.
I live in New York City,and have never seen such images,that you have managed to capture,even though I have driven by them a thousand times.
Really nice work...
Thanks again,
Mike

Get over the idea that there is any "magic recipe" for sharpening that is appropriate for all images. Proper sharpening will vary depending on the camera, lens used, and the subject matter.

I'm down to
 Amt=150
 Radius=1
threshold=5-10
 Looks like these are better starting points...
Thanks,
Mike

Canon's recommended is around Radius=0.3, Amt=100-150, Threshold=0.

Depending upon your RAW converter you need to ensure that the converter is not sharpening the image during the conversion - if so then reduce your USM accordingly.

If you have PS CS2 then you may wish to give smart sharpen a try with 'lens blur' setting and similar figures to the above as well.

I'm using photoshop elements2...and even that is greek to me.
Still learning .
I'll give your settings a try.
I do not use the sharpen feature in my conversion{file viewer utility} process. Suggestions  of any kind would be welcome.
Thanks for your help,
Mike
