Title: USB-3 on 2010 MacPro
Post by: Jim Pascoe on June 16, 2014, 11:52:49 am
I am looking to get another external hard drive solution for my MacPro but don't want to be limited to Firewire or USB-2.  So I recently bought, but only just installed, a CalDigit USB 3 PCI express card - very easy to install in the Mac.  I downloaded the software and the card seems to connect fine.  I also recently bought a new CF/SD card reader that is supposedly USB 3 compatible and I thought I would try downloading pictures from the card to see how fast USB 3 is compared to USB 2.

However I am perturbed that the new USB 3 slots are glacially slow.  My test involved downloading about 5 GB of data from an SD card.  The results are -

Old Sandisc card reader into USB 2 took 5 minutes
New Hama card reader into USB 2 took 3 minutes
New Hama card reader into USB 3 - estimated time 90 minutes (I gave up after 20)

Does anybody have any suggestions?  Incidentally I am looking at OWC Mercury Elite Pro 4-bay RAID for my external storage.  I know it is possible to get e-SATA for connection but I was hoping to go the USB 3 route.

Maybe a driver problem? Do you have any other USB 3 devices to test with? In any case, I’d be in touch with CalDigit asap.

Hello Rob

I have just e-mailed CalDigit so await their reply.  I do not have any other USB 3 devices yet - hoping to get them soon.
