Title: GH4 and Ninja Star
Post by: tjbates on May 01, 2014, 06:16:29 pm
Anyone know if 4K footage shot internally to the GH4 replays (from the camera) 1080p 4.2.2 via HDMI cable to a Ninja Star recorder? I asked Atomos support who weren't sure. For me this would be a great hardware means of transcoding selected 4K clips to 1080p ProRes 4.2.2 at the end of the day, without having the Ninja Star coupled to the camera during a shoot. And avoid slow software transcoding sessions.
Many thanks!

Anything coming off a card rather than live from the sensor is going to be in 4:2:0.

I realise that internally recorded 4K is 4.2.0.
There is an argument floating around that internally recorded 4K 4.2.0 material has enough colour information to create (through a transcoding application)- 1080p 4.4.4 or 1080p 4.2.2 files.
This theory has apparently been proven -http://www.eoshd.com/content/12594/exclusive-first-app-resample-panasonic-gh4-4k-8bit-10bit-444
I was just hoping I could do this with hardware instead of software.

Your entering into the crazy world of 4k or not, downsampling, mbs, compression, depth and of course look.

I strongly suggest not worrying about the numbers, just shoot, transcode out to pro res and dropping it into the free Di Vinci resolve.

Start messing with the footage and see how it hangs, holds and looks.

Numbers mean nothing without the look, or if you have alaising or just basic motion issues.

I haven't picked up my gh4 yet as I've been busy and don't need it this instance, but I'd love to see the look as much as the detail.

If it looks like my REDs the sony F65 (much more expensive cameras) I'll be over the moon, regardless of the numbers.

Thanks for the input. I don't yet need the GH4 for 4K distribution. I would like however, to finally get true (detailed and with full colour info) 1080p out of a DSLR style camera. I also don't want to immediately upgrade my ageing MacBook Pro to handle 4K editing. Shooting 4K and then transcoding to 2K makes a lot of sense.
The 4K files that I've seen look soooo much better than shooting 1080p. The Atomos Star (don't need an LCD screen) sounds like a nice hardware solution for transcoding into ProRes 422.
