I believe this needs size to work.
Seeing it full-size on the screen is just working, but I imagine a larger print.
The shadow being so near to the tree would be my only nit,
maybe cropping off the lowest part of it, just above the smaller bump on the left side would do it.
Or you go the dreaded route of local luminosity adjustments .....

P.S.: I just realized I did something nasty to the color - however - my edit is about the shadow ...

It's a good try, Jeremy, but to me that tree is too close to the shadow in the lower right to be graphically effective. One way to check this is to do a quick B&W conversion so that you can see the graphics without the distraction of color.

OK, Chris, I am, as usual, ready to learn. What did you do to remove the shadow?

Basically localized curves and color adjustment.

I would try cropping the top just below the cliff and shadow at the top.  That would leave the tree and shadows as the major contrasting elements and the relationship between the tree and shadow as the focal point.

I really love these heroic little trees, anyway it is not completely alone, there are some bushes with which it can chat.
