Hello.
I've just purchased LR5 through Adobe's Creative Cloud scheme (I purchased LR & PS); however when I went to download the software onto my Mac OSX v10.6.8, I receive a message that won't allow me to proceed, reading "you are running an operating system that Lightroom no longer recognises."
Does anyone know what I have to do to my computer to allow LR5 and prob PS +++ versions to install?
The system requirements required for LR 5 state you need Mac OS v10.7 or v10.8 - can these be upgraded or do I need to purchase more?
In my research on this topic I've read something about Apple introducting 'Mavericks' which allow LR 5 compatability.
Now confused... and worried!!

Mavericks is the current version of Mac OS. If you want to upgrade you need first to check the compatibility with your computer as detailed in this page:

A other consideration with upgrading to 10.7-.8-.9 is that some of your older commercial software may "brick" since it's no longer compatible. For me and still using legacy software that works fine and not wanting to pay this additional "upgrade tax", I bought another drive, an SSD and cloned my 10.6.8 onto it and then updated to 10.8 so I could use LR and Photoshop CC.
The process took but a couple of hours instead of the days I figured it would to get it all functioning with print drivers, etc. nd now I can run the new on the new drive yet boot into the old OS to run that software.
In my case, I had an extra internal slot to place the SSD. When I did the same on my MBP, I cloned to an external drive just in case, and then updated to 10.9, Mavericks. So far, so good.
Before any OS update, it's always a good idea to clone/backup so you can have access to your old software, especially of its mission-critical.

Another option (if you don't want to purchase another hard drive and if you have sufficient space on your current hard drive) is to use Disk Utility to partition your hard drive. You would then install Mavericks on the new partition.
For example, a 1 TB drive could be split into two partitions:
Partition #1: Mac OS 10.6.8 (the original Snow Leopard and all your original files) 500 GB
Partition #2 (new): Mac OS 10.9.2 (Mavericks, plus new applications such as LR) 500 GB
Similar to Larry's method, the partition method allows you keep using your older software and use a new operating system on the same computer, but you don't have buy a new hard drive. You'll have to restart the computer each time you want to switch to the other OS (by holding the Option key while restarting).
Of course, before you create a partition you should back up your files first in case something goes wrong during the partitioning process. If you are unsure about the steps for creating a partition, here's an online tutorial (http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-and-why-you-might-want-to-partition-your-macs-hard-drive--mac-53965), or you can search the Internet for other resources.

This is an issue you will have moving forward with Snow Leopard--lack of software upgrades. I have upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and have not had any problems with the software I use. Upgrading is the price you will pay to get the current and future improvements to LR.
My current desktop is almost 7 years old and about to be put out to pasture. It is now some what slow when using Adobe products. I'm finally biting the bullet and buying a new desktop. Hope to have a new "trash can" delivered in the next few weeks.
