Title: Abraham Lake

Can anyone please give me some advice regarding shooting Abraham Lake  52 13 25N 116 25 38W The lake is on the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta and it's famous for the trapped air bubbles in the ice.

I would love to know between which months the lake is usually frozen, forgive me please if this is a silly question to those who know the area, I live in the UK.

Also are there certain areas of the lake that get more bubbles than other areas. Again that might sound like a silly question but I guess it's feasible that only certain areas get the methane gas released.

Finally, do the roads usually stay open, I'm guessing snow chains but accessible in a Subaru Outback as it is on the main highway.

I've not photographed bubbles there but know the lake and the scenery around it - very pretty.  It is on a gorgeous road, the David Thompson highway, and the area around is spectacular to photograph.  The road should be open all winter long (excepting acute storms) and I would guess that the lake is frozen from November to April.  There are a lot of winds in the area and not a lot of precipitation (it is just to the east of the Rockies) so I suspect that you will see ice (rather than snow covered ice).  Hope this helps.

the roads are fine and it is open year round but can get icy at certain spots.
drove up there last winter with my WRX and winter tires with no issues, although it's still a 1 hour drive from Rocky Mountain House
From what I've read, the best time to go is end of January to early March, mid Feb would be ideal.

Taken last summer, wish I could have spent more time there.
