I have a ColorMunki Photo and plan to buy a PA 272 display or similar. Do I gain anything if I buy the NEC display with the SpectraView package, or can I get the same results with the $99 SpectraView software purchased separately and use it with the ColorMunki Photo spectrophotometer?

I tested the two devices back in Jan. of this year. I own the ColorMunki Photo and borrowed the NEC device from a friend who bought the NEC PA-301W ( I own the PA271W). Did about a dozen calibrations with each over a few day and grabbed screen shots of each. Deleted the capture a couple of month back.
Did not notice any perceivable changes when switching between the profiles and the important data from the calibration info from the SpectraView II software was the same. Now the PA-272 is using LED backlighting. Maybe one of the experts here might have more info.

ColorMunki Photo is a Spectrophotometer and while an excellent device, it's not going to measure very dark emissive colors as well as the NEC branded, X-Rite built Colorimeter can do. In terms of software, you absolutely want to use the SpectraView II software, NOT the X-rite software to calibrate this NEC display! So yes, you want to drop that $99 and sure, use the ColorMunki Photo knowing that their colorimeter will do a tad better job measuring dark colors from the display.

Interesting, thanks. Is the difference in dark colors discernible, or only theoretical? Can the colorimeter that comes with the NEC be used to calibrate other devices, like laptop display?

I can't say if there's a visible difference as there are many factors in play. The Munki will work, no question. The NEC puck can only be used on the NEC (but you have the Munki). You DO want the SpectraView software, no question.

Thank you. I will likely start with the CM and SV II software and if it is not good enough, I will get the i1 Display Pro separately. It is not that much more expensive and will allow making profiles on other displays.
