The leaves change color at different times depending upon the microclimate of the vineyard. One may be beginning to turn golden while a half mile away another vineyard may have all the leaves on the vines already brown. With the frost that hit today the leaves will turn rapidly and start to fall off the vines.

My favorite places are the areas around Templeton west of Hwy 101 and the area around Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo county. A tenth as many people and the same rolling hills with grape vines and oak trees. Hotel rates are also cheaper and this area is 30 minutes from the coast and Hearst Castle and Morro Bay and starting in November the elephant seals arrive a few miles north of San Simeon and start to have their pups.

With the wine country there is the option of a day or two at Point Reyes with the Tule Elk and watching the gray whales go past the point (estimated that 94% of the gray whales pass within a mile of this area).
