Title: Idiot question
Post by: Barossa.1 on October 29, 2013, 10:39:00 pm
Just made a major change in my work from architecture to wine and OMG its like being a learner again!

So, here is my question and I apologise for it being a numpty one but its got me stumped.

I'm photographing wine bottles and the background is coming out slightly grey. I want it whiter than white to the bottle appears to float. Changing levels changes everything rather than just the off white background. How do I do it? Easy idiot proof steps please!

Light the background separately from the bottle.

Or, if you're trying to correct already-photographed scenes, in Photoshop make a selection of just the BG and use "Levels" to adjust.

......can the background levels be changed separately from the bottle in CO?

You either have to light the background separately like Kirk said or you can put a layer mask on it in CO and push it's exposure until you get what you want. But, it depends on where your exposure is. Again, I would recommend lighting separately for the background, this is the easiest and far superior way of doing it. Have a look on youtube for lighting wine bottles, there are a lot of videos to help you out. Also look for phase one tutorials to learn what it can do for you regarding layer masks.

Have you not had to make changes to sky vs hoizons in arch photo? Same thing.
