Title: Myanmar/Burma
Post by: adpix on October 26, 2013, 03:23:21 pm
Any good advice on cruising the Irrawaddy from Mandalay to Rangoon (old names) and cultural stops along the way?  I'll be packing a D800, 24-120/F4 and 70-200/F4 zooms

Thanks

Bagan/Pagan is a must, but you have to stay there for a few days to catch the sunrise/sunset from the top of the temples (of which there are a few thousand...).

My previous post with 3 images from Bagan: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=72641.0

Thanks for the tip.  Could you move around freely, without police "minders" or significant physical impediments?

Bagan is The Tourist Place in Burma, total freedom of movement, even if some temples are closed for repair or safety reasons (unlike the first time I was there in -84). Rent a bike for a day for a few $ if you want to get sweaty, or a horse cart for $15 or something for a day.

Last year it was easy to move around, it is not a the police state it used to be. We even got to some closed areas with a permission from the president's office, no westerners had been there since before WW2. There 2 policemen followed us on scooters, but no hassles.

I was just in Bagan 2 weeks ago, you have to stop there. You won't see anything like it anywhere.
Yangon is also a great city to wander.

My post about it is here-
