Title: My GX-7 broke
Post by: John Camp on October 13, 2013, 12:46:06 am
I don't know if this is a developing trend or not, but I bought a GX-7 (through Amazon) and it suddenly stopped working -- one day I just got a message that said  something like "Please turn the camera off and on again." And that was it -- every time I turned the camera off and on again, all I got was that message. I'd seen a couple reports of problems on DP Review, and they were identical to mine. Anyway, I went on-line with Panasonic and they told me instantly that it was a fatal error and the camera would have to be sent to their Texas repair facility where it would either be repaired or replaced with a factory refurbished machine. The action was so clear and immediate (with what appeared to be canned responses) that it suggested to me that Panasonic is very familiar with this complaint. They gave me a website to go to, to start the process of repair, but I couldn't complete it because nothing I typed into a required "model" identifier field was accepted, and the site doesn't recognize "Panasonic DMC-GX7" as a Panasonic product. That was a dead end. I think I can return it to Amazon for a new one, but I'm not sure of that, either. I had taken less than a hundred shots when it died.

I actually bought two of these cameras, and one of them I got from Henrys in Canada because I wanted a black model. I'm just praying that that one doesn't go up in smoke as well, because I don't know if that camera will be returnable.

In any case, if you're thinking about a GX-7, keep this in mind. I like the camera a lot, and had just bought a new $1600 lens to go with it. Traveling with the 7-14, 12-35 and 35-100 (the last two constant f2.8) is way better than traveling with a similar Nikon kit...except, of course, that the Nikon works.

No problems with my GX7 so far. I'm about five days and 500 exposures in. I really like it! Size, heft, EVF placement & quality, speed of operation, image quality...all great. The menu system is far better organized than the Olympus labyrinth. OTOH Oly's Super Control Panel does give me quick access to some functions I have to menu dive to access on the Panasonic. The Display button is a bit close to my right thumb...I've inadvertently pressed it a few times, though less so as I use the camera more.

Panasonic should just send you a replacement in exchange for your defective sample.

Thanks for the heads-up!  (And sorry have such bad news to bear.)

... , I went on-line with Panasonic and they ... . ... gave me a website to go to, ... and the site doesn't recognize "Panasonic DMC-GX7" as a Panasonic product. That was a dead end.
Did you return again "on-line with Panasonic" to report this problem?

Unless, of course, it works by spitting oil on the sensor or not focusing the left side.   ;D
(And Nikon, w/o explicitly saying "sorry", issues a new version all of a sudden!
