Title: Thrashing
Post by: wolfnowl on October 09, 2013, 05:45:02 pm
Okay, so shooting handheld, at twilight, with a cell phone probably isn't the best idea, but I was there and thought this might be an idea worth pursuing again.  When the fall/winter storms come the ocean tends to rip the bull kelp away from their holdfasts and pound them against the shore or whatever happens to be convenient.  You can also get mats of kelp tangles; more than once I've seen herons and other birds riding them...

Mike.

Nice capture, for some reason it made me think of Jules Verne  ;D

I rather like it as an abstract piece. As for the Jules Verne comment, I agree, there's a certain ominous quality. Can't make up my mind about whether the camera shake adds to the pic or distracts. If you said you'd done it deliberately, I'd say bravo. FWIW, I'd bring up the contrast a bit or at least the highlights.

Fascinating image. It well illustrates the adage that the camera you have with you is the best one for the shot.

Thanks folks.  As I said, it was just to see if it was an idea worth exploring.  I seem to have developed a thing for bull kelp since I landed out here on the wet coast.  ;)

I love the first, Mike. Might a slightly less aggressive crop make it even better?

Exactly, Graeme. That's the connection my unconscious was trying to make.

No crop, Jeremy, just what fit in the cell phone frame.
