Trying to use the proper ICC profile for Epson's Ultra Premium Luster paper in LR5. The Epson ICC profiles download for this printer do not open on Intel Macs, only PowerPC Macs. Is there a viable substitute profile?

The profile should download with the driver, there should be no need to download it separately. Maybe it is there under a different name? The 'ultra' only designates sheets, the surface is identical to the Premium Photo Paper Lustre.

Some of the profiles Epson offers on the web are .sea files, which were openable with Stuffit way back in the age of dinosaurs. Is this the problem you are having?

Lustre paper isn't exactly an exciting media. You can also try Kodak Professional's inkjet lustre paper icc profile. (Now through Brand Management---good folks btw). And I bet Breathing Color's vibrance lustre profile would be really really close too.

Thanks, but, no, that's not the issue. I can get the actual file to install the profile but for the fact that the file has a circle and a mark through it and when I try to open it, I get the error message that it is only for PowerPC Macs. I got a reply from Epson that they are not supporting this printer with Intel-compatible profiles (of course, Intel processors have been in Macs since 2006!).
Also, I don't get true black in my B&W photo prints (usually on Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Matte) for which there is no exact icc profile either. Using all Epson inks. Very frustrating.

It is an ICC profile, there should be no hardware issue. A profile simply provides tables to map input colors to a standard space, and then from that to your output space.
And as Ken points out, any decent lustre paper profile made for your printer should work just fine. If you want to find a better match, have a look at Ernst Dinkla’s Spectrum Viz; you should be able to fine a good match in there somewhere.

I agree that it should not be a hardware issue, yet it is--and Epson confirmed that.

There should be a solution to have that profile accepted but in the meantime:
Identical third party papers are shown in the attached image.
Identical on weight + spectral plot; there still can be differences that could influence the profile creation.
Epson and Canon have more RC papers that have an identical spectral plot. There are more RC papers with similar plots but I selected the best fits. Check it yourself.
