Title: Printing from Smart Previews?
Post by: luxborealis on August 23, 2013, 01:36:21 pm
I understood that because a Smart Preview is 2540pixels on the longest side, that I would be able to make a print from a Smart Preview that requires fewer than that number of pixels.

The scenario is this: I just tried to print a 4x6" snapshot at 300ppi to my HP printer (=1800 pixels x 1200 pixels = smaller than Smart Preview) from a Smart preview and a LR message came up saying it could not do that.

What's up?

http://blog.datacolor.com/sean-duggan-working-smart-with-smart-previews-in-lr5-part-1/ Reading this, printing is not possible from a Smart Preview.

However: You can export an 1200x1800 px file to a JPEG, reimport into your catalog and print from there.

Many thanks. i guess I misunderstood the value of Smart Previews. It's great to be able to edit/process Smart Previews, but since it's a 2540px jpeg, I would have thought at least some, limited printing would also be possible. I guess not (yet?!).

Smart Previews are not a JPEG, it's a downsampled and compressed DNG.
So it can be both, "RAW" and much smaller.
I dont use Smart Previews but a exprt as JPEG, re-import and print is quickly done, quicker anyway then waiting to get home after a trip to print.
