Is that a flare or fog in the upper left?

On the subject of title... were those code words for a Dark, Ominous Morning? ;)

Now seriously, quite a successful shot.

Really more a mist than fog, but a bit dense in places. This was shot down around Big Sur but I found the fog/mist all along the CA, OR and WA coast to be like that. You might have a very bright lit scene and 300 feet to the left, misty fog-like conditions. weird weather.

It's a nice, moody shot.

Well, since everyone gets to have an opinion, I started at the top and scrolled down until I got to the water, and all of a sudden it seemed out of place.  Really liked it to that point.  If it was my image I'd chop off the bottom at the shore.

As with previous poster, you might consider cropping bottom at water's edge, or at bottom of big rock on right...leaving a little water

I'm always open to suggestions and while I am still undecided as to the yays and nays, I thought I would at least present another version for comparison.

The new version feels just right. IMHO, you don't need the water. Mike was right, and this works well.

I think a version that crops just below the rocks in the lower right (of the original) would also work, as Brandtb suggested.

Count me in for including the rock on the right and some dark water ... as I think the viewer's entrance and encounter is enhanced with a little in-boxing.  In the second picture (cropped tighter) the tree intrudes on the picture plane, which runs counter to the genre as well as the subject as announced by the title.  And with the third element (the water) removed, a dialog is created between the two trees.  I don't know the artist's intent, but that dialog is, to me, distraction and not substance.

For fancy improvement, I would compress vertically the water at the bottom, and darken the lights in that water.  I suspect this subtle and slightly moody repoussoir would serve as a successful visual entrĂ©e to the very there tree.

Fancy or simple, I would soften the edge of the fog/flare where it crosses the right-rear tree trunk.

Yup. Just like that.  :)
