The external HD that held my LR4 photo originals fell on the floor. Although it kept spinning, the directories were all empty but slowly recovered over a 4-6 hr period (Lacie d2 quadra). Nevertheless, I would like to take a conservative approach on a filesystem that held 25k originals. I have a recent backup, but it is one import behind my current catalog, and I do not have a catalog backup that matches the backed up photo library. But I still have the originals from the last import.
One idea I had was to save the recent (uncataloged) subfolder, recover the photos from backup, re-add the subfolder, then open LR with the most recent catalog. Would that work?
Although I was an experienced Unix DBA & backup & recovery expert, there is not a lot published on LR internals & db recovery.
Any advice or references would be appreciated.

If tcan't find an original file, it's just marked as missing (the question mark) in the catalog.
I'd say keep your most recent LR catalog, and reconstruct your originals folder from your different source until nothing is marked missing in LR anymore.

There is a lesson here.
If one drops one's hard drive on to the floor, one should not allow one's maid to hoover the floor until all the files have been shoveled back into the correct directories.
(Anyone who accidentally tipped a cabinet full of Kodachrome 25 trannies on to the floor will know what I mean.)
