Title: RX100 mk2 announced
Post by: BernardLanguillier on June 27, 2013, 01:36:29 am
The samples seem even better than those of the RX100...

As much as I don't understand the value of the RX1R, the RX100 mk2 turns a great camera into an even better one.

Cheers,
Bernard

Hi Bernard

Yes, I've just seen the Preview.

OK the new RX100MKII seems to be better in low light (faster focus), has a tilting screen and a hotshoe for flash.

But sadly, the announced increase in sensitivity is not real, now it start @ISO160, ISO80 not more available, and ISO100, 125 are expanded modes !
Combined that with the fact that max. speed is only 1/2000S and no ND filter, I'm very deceived !!

And the official price is even higher than the RX100.

Have a Nice Day.

Thierry,
It must be real if the new back-illuminated sensor results in greater sensitivity. The impression I get is that ISO 160 with the new camera will produce the same technical quality, regarding noise and dynamic range, as the older model does at ISO 80, and better technical quality than the older model does at ISO 160.  But I could be wrong.

"A new, back-illuminated 20MP sensor (the largest BSI chip we've yet encountered), gives a claimed 40% improvement in low-light sensitivity, which should allow the RX100 II to focus faster in low light than its predecessor, as well, of course, as resulting in cleaner high-ISO images."
Title: RX100 mk2: more sensitive to light, so higher base ISO sensitivity

As I replied to the same comment in another thread

this is a real increase in sensitivity; just not one that also increases dynamic range, because it is achieved by detecting more light rather than by having less read noise. A higher base ISO sensitivity is what one should expect when the a sensor is more sensitive to light.

Let's wait full comparative tests with RAW files ;) ;)

What's missing now is a great touch screen with touch to focus/shoot to go along with that tilting screen. And I hope the stabilization is better than in the current one where it's not that great for stills. Hmm, what else .. and make the ring around the lens less freely moving and more responsive.
Otherwise I'm mostly happy with it although it kind of screws up my decision to buy a travel camera: can't find any with significant better quality and similar versatility without going up a lot in size/price.

It's nice to see both Sigma (Dp) and Sony (Rx) the compact market with decent image quality, where Nikon and Canon have basically given up any attempt to service those markets.

Title: RX100 mk2 announced: the camera makers have split, SLR vs other

It's nice to see both Sigma (Dp) and Sony (Rx) the compact market with decent image quality, where Nikon and Canon have basically given up any attempt to service those markets.
And the situation is similar with compact system cameras. For better or worse, the sales of "large sensor cameras" (I count from about 4/3" format up) are still dominated by SLRs --- and specifically Canon and Nikon SLRs. So those companies still have little motivation to invest heavily in new types of cameras that they likely see as mostly attracting customers who would otherwise have bought one of their SLRs, so that the extra R&D expenses would not generate a sufficient nett increase in sales revenue. My hope is that sales of these new camera types eventually becomes too strong for the big two to ignore.

P. S. There is a flip-side: every other camera maker (35mm format and smaller) has abandoned the traditional SLR with OVF, and Sony seems set to move on from its EVF SLRs, leaving only two makers of any kind of SLR.

EDIT: As Bernard pointed out, I forgot that Pentax still offers SLRs, having fumbled badly its first attempt at a mirrorless system, so maybe Pentax wants to move to the "SLR alternatives" but has not succeeded yet. Maybe that oversight was a Freudian slip, as I fear that Pentax is wandering into irrelevance, not even getting the newer sensors offered in Sony and Nikon SLRs.

Pentax?

Seems like Nikon has addressed this with the  fixed lens, large sensor Coolpix A. Perhaps even better, The Ricoh GR (same specs) has also just been released - perhaps with the best ergonomics of compact cameras past/present.
