Title: New York City long exposure
Post by: batmura on June 26, 2013, 06:49:13 am
Hello!

I am a new member on this forum. I thought I would start with a photo I recently took while I was on vacation in New York City. I am particularly interested in long exposure photos of landscapes and cityscapes, and I would appreciate any feedback from you guys.

Nice shot that is well executed.  I am not sure if it is terribly original, but that doesn't diminish it's quality.  I find the deep purply-pink sky a bit strong to my taste. I really like the use of the pilings as an echo of the skyscrapers.  The fact that it is a long exposure (water blur) doesn't enter into my perception of the image much.

Nice!

The nuclear pink is not exactly my cup of tea, but I am sure many might like it.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, guys. The photo I posted is actually a second edit. Here is the original. Which one do you think is the better shot?

I also have a duo tone version of it.

All very nice. I'd love to see the "as you remember it" version.

I find the original better... still a bit nuclear, but the blue in the sky helps.

Very nice vision and execution. I like the latest version with the blue sky on top.  This is an ideal art show piece.

They are all quite good, but the duotone is most pleasing to me.  It seems less "commercial."

All three are very nice work. I like the second a bit more, I too like the blue in the sky on the second a bit better. As well the second seems to have a little bit more snap in the buildings, The Duo-tone is pretty good as well.

Excellent shot. Version #2 works better for me, due to the bluish tone in the sky, that is what I would expect the sky to look like at that time of the day. I would suggest a tighter crop on the right hand side, just left of the lamp (?). I find that area on the right adds nothing to the photo.

I prefer the original, more natural to my eyes.

I like the duotone better.  More abstract  But try it in B/W and post it.  Very interesting too.  Welcome.

Thanks! Here's a B&W conversion. How do you like it compared to the rest?

Less colors focuses your attention on the composition and tonality more. I think this is good.  Put another way, the color wasn't reinforcing strength of the image in its echoing vertical lines.

We are firmly in the space of opinion here, though, so don't feel like any of this diminishes the image you like best.

I think I'd prefer version 2.5, with processing somewhere between 2 and 3 (the duotone).  The black and white version is quite pleasing, as well.

Did you shoot any with a faster shutter speed?  Although I generally like silky water from long exposures, it might make for a stronger shot if the water to piling transition was more crisp, and mirrored the harder edges of the buildings against the sky.

Ditto here, not my cup of tea.

Exactly, the colors are a distraction, like a cheap effect. The image doesn't deserve effects, certainly not cheap ones.

Cheers,
Bart

I think we can reach a definite conclusion now. One of the four versions is better than the others; and which one depends on whose opinion is sought.  ;)

And there lies the problem. Not much reasoning to back up the opinions. What we DON'T want however is another Roger who could fill a page with his verbose, but something more than a one liner?
