Title: card reader is corrupting files, any recommendations on a good one??
Post by: stacibeth on June 25, 2013, 01:40:51 am
My old card reader died, so I just bought a brand new one from Calumet, the Pocket Pro CF usb 3.0 by Calumet. I used it once and it corrupted 6 files within the first use!! ERRRR :( SO, I will be returning it, and will need a new card reader yet again. Any recommendations?? I am only using the CF cards, and I have 2.0 and 3.0 usb ports, but I don't think it matters too much since most 3.0's are backwards compatible.  In the meantime I guess I'll go back to downloading straight from the camera.

I have found the Lexar to be great

I picked up the Kingston USB 3 cardreader (http://www.amazon.com/electronics/dp/B005ES0YYA) two months ago and haven't had any issues with it at all.  Nice to have the increased transfer speed particularly when CF cards are almost full.

I have both the Lexar and SanDisk USB 3.0 versions.... of the two I prefer the SanDisk.  The Lexar is a little finicky and loses connection from time to time.

My Kingston 3.0 has worked flawless for over a year. But need to ask, what software are you using to make the transfer?

A couple months back a guy reported a similar problem. After a long dialogue, he disclosed he was using some funky software that came with the card reader. Apparently it was being overrun by the faster USB 3 speed, resulting in random corrupt files.

Once he was convinced to just use Windows Explorer to drag and drop, all was OK.

Thanks for the imput.

I was just using the Canon EOS utility to download when I was transferring straight from the camera.

With the card reader, I was using zoombrowser, canon software that came with the camera. Could it possibly be zoombrowser and not the  card reader?

I'll try the windows, drag and drop

what is the best program for downloading images from the card reader? I was using zoombrowser, but now i'm curious if it was my card reader that was corrupting the files, or the program..... what are you guys using to download?

Thanks

On windows7 (64-bit) i use both sandisk and lexar with standard windows drivers, do not recall having had to install any software. Both work without a problem. Addition: I usually use Lightroom to copy my image files from the cards onto my harddisks.

I use Downloader Pro.  Has been consistently great and error free over the years.  Lots of flexibility in file and folder naming, plus ability to be prompted for job codes.  Allow up to two add'l backup sites to write to for backup.

Only $29.

As for the reader, it may be that you simply got a bad unit. Might be worth taking a laptop down to the store and testing a replacement on the spot. That said, I've used Lexar for years with no issues.

Zoombrowser isn't the brightest candle in the chandelier, frankly, and it may be that it has buffering issues with USB 3.0, given that Canon aren't aggressive about their updates. I generally use Lightroom or Bridge to make transfers, but straight drag and drop works just fine if you don't care about adding metadata, making copies or converting to DNG during transfer.
