I'm interested in thoughts about or experiences with noise reduction in these two programs. Thanks for your input.

I have LR4, which I believe is the same as LR5 as far as noise reduction go. IMO, Dfine is both easier to use and a more powerful program. It is easier to use because it's automatic noise reduction setting is good most of the time. No need to worry about adjusting sliders, which can be a daunting task for newbies or those who have trouble deciding how much noise reduction to apply. It is a more powerful program because you can choose where to measure noise as well as use control points to target noise reduction.

Same for me. The locality is everything. LR defaults sensibly to zero luminance noise reduction because that kills resolution. So I keep LR's default noise reduction, which is very good, but then use DFine to apply luminance noise reduction to skys. I do lanscapes.
