Title: Pasting a Layer into a Channel

I'm trying to paste a layer from one image into one of the RGB channels in another, blank image.  I've done this before and it worked but now it doesn't seem to.

I've got three separate greyscale images, each representing a Red, Green and Blue filtered image.  I'm trying to take each of the RGB images and paste it back into the respective channel in a new, RGB image.  I copy the layer from the greyscale image, activate the Red channel in the destination image, hit CTRL+V and nothing happens.  The channel remains blank.  If I activate the RGB composite channel and paste there, it works fine but that's not what I want.

If the source document and the target document are the same pixel dimensions, you can use the "Image > Apply Image..." menu command.  This will permit you to specify the source document, layer and channel that you want to insert into the active channel of the target document.

So, with the target document active, go to the Channels tab and select the channel into which you would like to insert the layer from your source document.

Go to "Image > Apply Image" and select the source document, the source layer and the merged channel (channel should not matter).  Here you can also select a blend mode, etc. but set that to Normal for your purposes.

Hit OK and the target channel should be good to go.  This way you don't have to keep switching between documents to Copy and Paste.  Just remember, Apply Image only works for documents that have the same dimensions.

As for why your old way is not working, I don;t know.

Thanks, Kirk.  I know Apply Image will work.  It was why the other method wouldn't work that I couldn't figure out.  But I just did.  When I created the new document, I had it set to have the Background Contents as Transparent rather than actually filled.  Not sure how it got that way because I don't work with new, transparent documents, but it did.  Resolved.
