Title: New MacBook Pros
Post by: Rajan Parrikar on May 29, 2013, 01:22:40 pm
Any chance that the new Haswell rMBPs expected next month will address more than 16GB of RAM?

Why would the mass market need this?

Cheers,

I don't know. I know why I need it. It would be my main workstation attached to the large NEC monitor. My current MBP has 8GB and does fine (*) with the 24MB files out of the 5D Mark III. But with Canon likely to offer 40+ megapixel bodies in the near future, I would like to have at hand at least 32GB of RAM.

(*) Except when I put it up to stitch 10 or so files for a pano.

RAM is like money - you always wish you had more.

I've been running 32 Gig of RAM for 5 years in my Mac Pro and really wish I had 64+.......

Yes, but you can max out a Mac Pro at 128GB.  Whereas my 2010 MBP model has a ceiling of 8GB, and the current MPB models cannot go beyond 16GB.

The high-end of MacBook Pros are hardly aimed at the "mass-market": they seem popular with photographers for example. So maybe the question should be "how many Mac OS users want more than 16GB or RAM in a mobile device? Many of us are tempted by the idea of a laptop plus "docking station" (e.g. Cinema Display) being our only computer.

Indeed, yes.  It has been my preferred way of doing things the past few years and I am looking forward to the June 10 announcement.  My current non-Retina MBP has two drives, a 500GB SSD for system and application files, and a 1.5TB HDD for data.  The Retina-MBP, however, does not allow for 2 drives (since it has no optical bay).

Me too. I'm seeing great deals on refurbished MacPro's but I'm going to hang on a little longer. I'm currently running a MBP with external drives and a big NEC display but it's not working out quite as well as I'd like in terms of all the external drives. I'd prefer popping most into a tower.

I have been thinking about the external drive solution.  I have read mixed reviews of the Pegasus system (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Thunderbolt/).

MBPs are not limited by the chipset, they are limited by size, only having two stick slots.  Since the market for more than 16GB is so tiny for them, no one makes 16GB single sticks for them.  Don't expect that to change any time soon.  People that need ram generally son't consider tiny form factors like laptops anyway.

Shame it's made in the u.s. that's probably going to bump the price up for European buyers and its not going to make it higher quality than something made in Asia.
I like the size/form/spec and the external expansion options, just depends on the price.

The Big Iron is dead, long live Small Anus! ;)

It will definitely match better with my black NEC displays and Intuos 5, I hope there will also be a black keyboard.
