Title: Canvas print tutorial? R2400?
Post by: OldRoy on May 27, 2013, 05:52:22 am
I have an Epson R2400 printer. So far my only attempt to print on canvas was completely unsuccessful however I have an opportunity which makes this now an interesting proposition - but not interesting enough to invest in a larger format printer just yet.

Two questions.
Has anyone here succeeded in producing acceptable canvas output from this printer?
Could someone direct me to a good tutorial on using canvas?

Advice appreciated.

What would you like to know?
Did you get it to feed properly? That is the most problematic issue.
What was unsuccessful with your first attempt?

It's a while ago but I fed a cut sheet (approx A3) of Epson Water Resistant Matte Canvas through using the suggested profile (can't recall which except there's no specific Canvas profile available in the print dialog.) I used the regular paper feed rather than the roll feed slot. The output was totally desaturated - this for an image that I've printed successfully on a couple of different grades of Epson paper stock.

That aside, I'd like to be able to print and mount canvas, something that I've never done previously so the issue of stretching, sealing etc are all new to me. The first stage is to establish whether in principle the R2400 is capable of acceptable results.

 Which black ink?
Was the profile you used the proper one?
I have different printers then yours but see no reason you cannot get good results with what you have.
Just like your paper prints use the profile for the canvas you are using plus the right black ink.
If you get poor results again load a screenshot and we will see what's going on.

Thanks for the contributions. Unfortunately I think I've dumped the test print. The profile selected was that suggested in the Epson manual (but, as I said, I don't recall which.) I'll put a test through in the next 2 days and attach the result. To be continued...

A couple of years ago I used canvas from http://www.marrutt.com/ with their continous ink system, and although I managed a few canvases with their profile, a lot of the canvases had streaks across them, and I couldn't work out why, or when it would happen.
I had problems with blocked heads and in the end I gave up and invested in an Epson 4900.

It would be best to download a profile from the manufacturer of the canvas or have a custom profile made.  As you stated, there is no canvas setting on the printer.  The profile should have instructions on what paper setting to use.  As Dan said, using the correct black ink is important.

I have no experience with that canvas, but the matte canvases I use need to be coated.  They will look flat until they are coated.  If you have a custom profile made, you can have it made with coated canvas which will allow you to soft proof the image as it will look coated.
