Title: [Help] recommendation of lens for Sinar P2 + P30+ back
Post by: 510photo on May 16, 2013, 12:23:55 am
Hi everyone,

I have never take picture with large format + digital back (I am going to get the P30+ to work with my Sinar P2).
A little history, I had have used Linhof s45 with 210mm attached a DSLR body, the result of the image it became a macro shot.

In contrast with digit back, is that the result to be the same as the DSLR?

And What happen if I change to the real macro lens (like Schneider Makro - Symmar HM 120mm /f5.6 MC)

That's why I am confused which lens works perfectly in product photo with LF+digital back? (like watch, jewelry

Last couple questions, what is the advantage and shortage of using LF+digital back?  Can I also do architecture photography with my Sinar P2+P30 as well?( just wondering to know to what can I do with this)

I have no first hand experience with this. But I was told that the P30/P30+ does not do well with Tilts and shifts, I was told it has something to do with the design of the sensor...

I heard also that P30 is not suitable for tilt camera and still-life setting due to the design. P25(+) or P45(+)(also of course P65 and IQ 140,160, 180...) should be better. In still life setting, a normal lens is around 100, for example, schneider 100 digitar lens can be a starting point for still-life setting. 80 becomes a little!! wider lens and 120 becomes a little!! long lens. Degitar or digital lenses are usually better. For the macro work, schneider 120 macro digitar is respected... A big advantage is the fact that you can use tilt (and swing). You can control perspective and focus plane using bellow cameras. This control can be important in some areas of photography.
You have a good choice of lenses. A disadvantage is ...it can be very complicated regarding with the equipment and skills to handle those, for the beginners... you need some skills and a lot of infos to deal with this set-up... It can be expensive to have the right set-up too. It might be a good idea to study enough before you start to buy things.

The P30+ is not recommended for large format cameras with wide angle lenses, tilts, or swings. This is due to the micro lenses on the sensor. Light can hit these micro lenses at harsh angles causing bad color casts that may not be correctable in post. I have used a Sinar P2 to photograph still life and used a 100mm lens which worked well. Having tilts and swings is great when you want to control perspective and focus. I prefer using a large format camera vs a medium format camera in the studio to capture still life, It allows you to slow down and focus on fine detail.

If you have not acquired a P30 already I would suggest getting a P45/P45+. The P45+ is not susceptible to the color cast issues found on a P30 on a larger format system. Like the P30+, the P45+ also allows you to capture long exposures if need be, yet does not suffer from irreparable color casts.

Funny you should mention that, Louis.

510P - if you haven't already splurged on the P30+, unless you're buying off eBay/end user sale, getting to a P45 might not be much of a difference:

https://captureintegration.com/product/phase-one-p45-hasselblad-h-mount-3/

This unit is an internally upgraded P45, meaning that while the LCD is the same as the dim LCD from the original P45, the internals have been upgraded to P45+ level, meaning it has tethered live view and is capable of long exposures (at least up to 20 minutes, easily). It's a larger sensor than the P30+, has more megapixels and does not suffer from the irreparable color casts Louis referenced.

Now, I will say I have had a few clients who used P30+ DB's with movements, but very very slight movements is all they could get away with. For a view camera and all the movement options, it's just not viable.
