I think I prefer the second one, as there is something nice going on in the sky with the wispy stratus clouds, although the scrub/sage grass in the foreground is a bit too dark for me - I wonder what the second image would look like if the scrub/sage was cropped out? Might make a more simplified, graphical and all round pleasing image.

As a geologist, I see wonderful geological markers, photographed under magical light, so I like it:)

These were two very different mornings presenting different visual moods. The first had an unfiltered illumination of the rising sun. The second morning saw thin clouds of the horizon with the result that the incident light was muted, enhancing colour and texture, but not providing the drama of the first.
