Thought it might be pleasant to have a special slot for these toys. Might even tempt Toke back...
Here's one to kick off with, then.

Did you use a Polariser on that one Rob?

Did you use a Polariser on that one Rob?
Yes, I think so, Walter; at any rate, I was screwing one on and off quite a bit during the walk, but unworked upon it (this shot) has the look of a polarized frame: had to mask off the boat and raise the blue to take it away from a darkish grey.
I don't think polas work as nicely with digital - tend to deaden things a bit but seem to help the whites.
Rob C

No snap today, but a huge helping of blues.
Walked down the marina after lunch to see a beautiful black power cruiser - in the 70' - 80' range - called 4 Girls. It's been here before and I didn't snap it, thinking it some guy's token homage to his daughters. Today, I learned that no, it is just four chicks that own it. They were all sitting having lunch on the afterdeck, clearly as happy as Larry (who is that blasted Larry, anyway?) and I didn't even have the heart to snap a snap. Maybe tomorrow, if they are still around and it's not cloudy and dull like today, and haven't sailed off into my sunset, I'll get something with a camera.
But why did it make me blue? Is it easier to accept a guy being incredibly richer but not a woman? Is there some hidden or even obvious sense of inadequacy behind such emotions, triggered by superior female financial clout? God alone knows, but it isn't pleasant either way. Must be the result of generation upon generation of rôle expectation. I wonder if zebras feel similar things? Lions obviously gave up on that centuries ago and enjoy the rewards of lying back and letting the 'esses get on with finding lunch.
I'll go now and apply some more varnish in the kitchen; that'll make things even.
Rob C
-
Rob, reaserch shows that relationships suffer when female partner earns more, so it is not just you, cheer up!

Rob, reaserch shows that relationships suffer when female partner earns more, so it is not just you, cheer up!
That's odd: richer (easy to be!) female partner would suit me just fine; it's the strangers that faze me. Perhaps it's the mystery, the idea that they know and practise something that I neither know nor can. Not that I'm suggesting they got there horizontally rather than vertically - might even have come from a winning ticket - but you know what I mean.
In an attempt to try and discover something about the setup, I went onto Google, and all I could come up with connected with 4 Girls was a multitude of almost identical snaps of pretty women sticking their bikinied rumps at the camera. How boring a few pages of that becomes. I gave up the search for enlightenment.
Ray knows about enlightenment, zen, karaoke and all that cool oriental jive; perhaps he might be able to supply some answers.

True, but the really, really clever lady never lets you know how badly you are doing.
It's been my philosophy to accept without struggle that they will be smarter: they are genetically wired that way - they have to be in order to deal with us guys.

The 8/500mm Cat this afternoon. Cold, windy and getting wet.
1/1000 sec, ISO 1000. D700.
Still don't think digital capture makes much out of black/white; far prefer conversions from Kodachrome.

Rob, don't know what you're using for your conversions, but if you have a late version of Photoshop or Lightroom, the Nik (Google) Sliver Efex Pro plugin does a beautiful job. I have a bunch of sliver on my walls from back in the days, but I can at least equal them and perhaps beat them by using Silver Efex and printing on an Epson 3880 with its built-in Advanced B&W mode. Wish you could see the print from the pic I posted in the "Gone" thread.

Old PS6, Russ, but that's also used on the Kodachrome conversions too, so the same PS being common to both, I take it that the failure comes from the digital camera capture, not the work after that.
Printers apart, the relatively poor quality is visible on the monitor; it's an emptiness of tonality, like bad four-colour litho could be in the day.

My late wife on the afterdeck of our friend's 25m Italian boat in Spain.
We were on the return leg of a cruise from Palma de Mallorca-Gibraltar-Palma de Mallorca via several mainland ports and also Ibiza.
None of us knew that a dozen years later one would be dead and the rest of us have our lives and loves in tatters too.
Carpe diem.
Kodachrome 64 Pro. Nikon F or F2 and probably a 2.8/35mm Nikkor.

Brian,
The simple answer is that they have been removed; some had copyright meta and some, I think, not.
I don't like leaving stuff up too long, and if I remember (always an increasing problem), I scrub out. Once a page has fallen behind a bit, I don't think anyone has the patience to scroll backwards, and the point of being present becomes lost.
Rob C
P.S. Where was your boat pic shot?
-
This makes me sad; shot for the sales brochure for this boat, the slightly longer boat after the Italian power yacht shown earlier. It was bought to replace the power one and allow long-distance cruising to the Amazon basin; in the event, ill health and death killed the owner's dream and the widow's own fading stamina forced sale.
Either Kodachrome 64 or Velvia 50, but I scanned this quite a while ago... Nikon with either 35mm or 24mm Nikkor. Location: off Palma de Mallorca.

Never been there, but my mother used to go, and took my girl cousin there once; enjoyed it a lot.
I would have guessed Malta because the boats there get painted too; here in Mallorca it's mostly just white. Can't remember about the Spanish mainland, but Portugal did colours too.
I like the shot.

I was there for a couple of days, tagging along when my wife went to a conference. It was quite pleasant, although seemed a bit resortish for my tastes.

Thanks! It was kind of striking to me, because the beach where I took it was right behind a very posh hotel, and mostly covered with luxury (boats included). But then there was this.

Very attractive mood - looks Scottish to me, which probably means that's the last place it would have been shot.
It's the kind of image that, in my mind, makes for a great monitor experience but would be, physically, far too weak on paper. Thank goodness for monitors!

Nikon F4s and Kodachrome 64.
Loved the diaphragm trademark on the right, for some reason.
Shot from our friend's boat before the later need to sell had asserted itself - nobody had the slightest idea what awaited around the corner. Just as well, I suppose, or we'd all worry ourselves to an earlier death than need be. Good health is so precarious a gift.

Not Scotland, Ron, but Porpoise Bay, Sechelt, British Columbia. Back in February we had a couple of days with quite dense early morning fog, so I did the 15 minute walk from where I live to the marina.
As for being too weak for print--may be so for a largish print, but it works nicely for me as a 4 X 6 print that I have begun using on my handwritten notes.

Yes, some Photoshop work to get rid of the background details. These two ladies were in a boatyard at St. Augustine back in 2004, waiting to be broken up I guess. But they were telling each other lifetimes of wild stories while they waited.

But only some minimal false colour additions!
The truth: Pan X, 60sec exposure to kill the water and moving clouds, and a large white reflector.

Back in 2008 the waterway at Tarpon Springs, Florida used to look like this. I don't think any of these boats actually were in service, but they still sat on the waterway. Tarpon is a Greek town that used to be supported by sponge fishing and now is supported by tourism. A year or so after I made this shot all these boats disappeared, making Tarpon a less picturesque place to visit. Because of the crowd of tourists it's still a great place to do street photography but not nearly as good a place to do boat photography.

No, Rob, you did not just post a psd file!?
Yep, my fingers are frozen and so is my brain!
Eating lunch today, I saw on the restaurant's TV that French weathermen have forecast that there will be no June, July, August summer weather this year.
I took two shots of 4girls, the first from the left of this one, and it was pretty much useless: the black hull and water are devoid of any detail... Just like the middle of January.
I'm told that the story about the boat is that it's the property of a UK real-estate developer/builder, and the four are his wife and daughters. Loses something in the hearing, but at least comforts me somewhat...
As Rod Stewart sings, some guys have all the luck. Or almost. I suspect luck has hee-haw to do with it.

I think I might carry a camera tomorrow and brave the elements - hoping for some female persons on the deck. Should there be any, then I shall ask them to make my day - and yours.
I believe they own a villa somewhere around here, in which case, I doubt they'd hang about their boat and freeze! Guess only a sunny day will tempt them out. Ain't nuttin' I have'll do it!

Putting on somebody else's second-guessing glasses (you know I don't own any myself), I wonder how the entire shot would look if you faked switched on lights on the tractor? Something small and relatively very bright could alter the atmosphere completely.

Good for you - it's amazing how we forget what we have hidden away.
The longest I can make my 500mm is around 750mm, by swapping it over to the old D200. But I don't really feel happy with that camera anymore after getting used to the D700. It doesn't do higher ISO too well, and with f8 max. and the need for short exposures, it's not the best tool...
Maybe the answer's to Hasselfake the images from the D700.

Rob,
Now I remember I have a 135mm canon FD with a spider web lying between a couple of lens elements.
It made some beautifully soft images. Couldn't get that kind of softness any other way.
Now I need to see how that works on 4/3 system.
