Title: Cheap digital 60mm tech cam lens with 90mm image circle?
Post by: torger on April 29, 2013, 09:27:26 am
Is there such a thing as an older cheap 60mm tech cam lens with (at least) 90mm image circle? I've seen the Digitar 60/4, but it has only 60mm image circle. I'd like something cheaper than the excellent new Schneider Digitar 60/5.6 because I'm, well, cheap, and the huge 120mm image circle makes it a bit heavy and overkill for my needs. Maybe it's the Rodenstock Apo-Sironar Digital 55mm that comes closest? Then I'll probably save up for the new 60 anyway though, as I intend to fill the gap between 47 and 72 as I have today, and the 55 is a bit too close to 47.

Does it have to be digital?

I don't really think there is such a thing as a cheap digital lens, is there?

This may or may not help (old, from the Large Format site). Lenses for 6x7:

Thanks for the tip.

The Schneider 80/4, 90/4.5 and 100/5.6 N are €900-€1100 + VAT new with copal shutter, I consider those "cheap". The new 60/5.6 is €2300 which I don't consider crazy expensive, but I hoped that maybe there is something in-between.

The SK 58mm/f5.6 Super Angulon is a good lens with a huge image circle

Besides the 58mm Super A, if you can work with a little longer focal length, don't discount the 65mm Super Angulons, Fujinons and Nikkor lenses. They should give you even a wider image circle than 90mm, though none of them were optimized for digital. May be worthwhile taking a look on eBay or KEH to search one out.

I would have thought that the Rodenstock 55/4.5 APO-Grandagon is a newer, faster and more optimised design than the Super Angulons.
It has a 110 degree FOV which covers 6x12 format at least (viz. Horseman 612 camera).

And it fits the budget that you gave (in used condition, anyway).

I would save up for the 60/5.6 - it's probably the finest lens I've ever used. In the meantime I'd email dealers that retail Schneider lenses and see if they have an ex-demo or display one ... you never know.

Try this one - the Nikkors are really good

I use to shoot with the 65mm rodenstock f4.5 grandagon and it was really great, I would not hesitate to use that on my tech camera if I needed the movement space..it easily covered 4x5. must be some used ones floating around.

I have tried out a lot of the old analogue lens on a P65+

The Rodenstock 65 is very sharp for landscape scenes. It's also a small very high quality built lens. An extremely nice lens.  Probably commands a premium price.

The Nikon lens are a mixed bag.  Some are good and some are very poor.  But to answer your question directly  The SW 65 f4.0 S Nikon is very good,   ( the Last S is important as it indicates the improved version )

The fujion SWD and CM series of lens are excellent.  All are good. 65, 75, 90, 105, 125, 135, 150, 180, 210, 250
The wides are better than the long as image circle is too big on the long lens.
65,75 and 90 are very very good.

These Fujion SWD and CM lens would be very good on a Techno.  You could buy all ten lens for the price of one digital lens,  all with board and ready to use directly on the techno.
