Title: Dirty trailing edge of print ???
Post by: David_G on April 18, 2013, 06:31:06 am
This is really got me stumped ....

EPSON 4900

I have a b&w image. When I print it the trailing edge gets a cyan/magenta dirty mark right across it.

I have rotated the print and the same happens - so that means its not the image.

I have changed stocks and it still happens.

I have printed other images in colour on the same stock without issue.

I am printing with 15mm (3/5in) of the edge though the printer meant to be able to do borderless.

If I reduce the print size considerably (print stops 50mm from edge/2inches) it disappears.

I have been using the Epson Fine Art Velvet their Cold & Hot Cold Press papers.

Any ideas appreciated ;)

Thanks,

David

Does not look like heads touching the paper surface so most likely not an HP or Canon printer but it could help if you add the printer brand and model to your message.

Yes ... I did edit that in ... it is an Epson 4900 ... you were too quick ;)

I have also tried raising the platen but to no effect :(

Sounds like the paper trailing edge is wiping excess ink off some part of the printer.

Could on of the wipers come adrift?

Looks more like some yellow etc print data does not come through at the end and you printing a B&W in Color mode instead of ABW mode as I would expect the last to do more Black+Grey substitution on that greyscale image. On an HP or Canon the substitution with B+G would be even higher so I figured it had to be an Epson. More a kind of weaving not finished at the end because the printer thinks there is not enough paper left. Either actual sizes and set sizes are mixed up or the media sensor sees the trailing edge too early. If I can trust my eyes with that scan.

Edit: I was only looking at the edge of the image, the brown-magenta in the middle is part of the problem I guess. Heads that touch media do not make such soft changes in my opinion, have no clue on that.

According to the Epson tech, printing too close to the edge on a cut sheet in fine art stocks will do this.

Did you ask then why they did not widen the trailing edge print margin for art papers accordingly so this flaw would not show?
