Title: when LR5 is purchased, will LR4 still be of legal use?
Post by: Etrsi_645 on April 16, 2013, 10:55:18 am
Once I have purchased LR5 down the line, will my purchased copy of LR4.4 still have legal EULA status either on the same computer or a different one?

thanks,

I believe so. Can't fathom why it wouldn’t.

If you buy an upgrade license [as/if/when] on the same computer [or rather two compueters, I think you are allowed to have it on two, though not used simultaneously): yes
But using the old software on other PC's: no. Adobe's activation system is robust and will prevent it.

because you do not own it... you own a license only.

If you buy an upgrade then no, you don't get to use any more copies.  If you buy LR5 outright then you can continue to use LR4 on two computers.

Seems worthwhile, especially if you wait for a sale or promotional price the new versions don't cost that much more than an upgrade.  I guess if you have to have LR5 right now as soon as it releases you won't find a good price, so maybe the upgrade will be the preferred deal.

LR 4 I have seen on sale for just over $100 USD, and the upgrade cost is $79.  So for about $25-30 more you could have a new copy outright, if you wait for a good sale.

Assuming LR5 pricing is similar to LR4.

So far Lightroom 1-4 hasn't used any sort of online activation.

From the licence agreement of LR4:

"If Customer wishes to use this Update in addition to the Prior Version, then Customer may only do so on  the same Computer on which it has installed and is using the Prior Version." (http://www.adobe.com/products/eulas/pdfs/Gen_WWCombined-MULTI-20120119_1426.pdf)

Sometimes these things are really interesting if you actually read them ;)

Unless something changes with LR 5 license agreement, you'll be able to use it on the same computer as LR 4. I have LR 3 and 4, and although most would not recommend it, I use 3 for most work, importing only photos that I am going to print to 4 (I have a separate small catalog for LR5) or those that I need the extra highlight recovery for. LR 4 is simply too slow for day-today use on my computer. If LR 5 is faster, then I will simply switch to that and combine the catalogs.
