Title: Milford Sound - Hit and run
Post by: Harald L on April 11, 2013, 07:56:22 am
Did you know that the west-coast of NZ's south island have 5.000 mm rain per year? This is 10 times of the rain we have in Hamburg and Hamburg isn't known for sunshine. Shortly after shooting this picture it started to pour down like from buckets. I've never got so soaked like that day.

I hope that the picture was worth it. C&C welcome.

Brooding - very brooding. It looks like it is about to chuck it down. And your composition certainly leaves us wanting more - I want to see beyond the foreground vegetation to what appears to be spectacular mountains. If this is what you intended, you've been successful.

Terry said it well.

I'm not shure if I can smell some irony. But seriously, I couldn't say it better. Your comment made me reflect once again on why I do like this picture: Perhaps it's not the discrepancy between the lush green and the dark clouds but rather because there's no feeling like unsatisfied curiosity.

But if you guys want it naked, here you are:

I travel to Milford Sound once a month on business. The mood is different every trip. This year has been very dry and the waterfalls not so spectacular. Here is a link to an early morning shot as the mist was rising off the Sound. If you are interested http://www.pbase.com/john_lamb/image/142749810

Good pics both.
Unfortunately those clouds hide the massive heights of the walls of the fjord.
Many of the mountains on either side go up a mile or more straight out of the fjord.
Seeing thousands of waterfalls coming down into Milford Sound straight out of the clouds is one of the natural wonders of the world.

I am considering visiting New Zealand again later this year - these images are sure giving me more than a bit of a tug.

I greatly enjoyed the photos of Milford Sound. I was there ~10 years ago and have great memories and some really good photos. The photos presented here took a very different perspective than I did (I was on a ship) so I appreciate them even more. My personal favorite is attached.
