May I solicit preferences? I was working up the full panorama and saw an alternative cropping that I did see in camera, but by then I'd lost that lovely cloud "arch" to the left.

Looks like you are trying to revive an old thread (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=24136.0), especially with #1 ;D, which appears to be better compositionally as well.

I prefer #1.

Very funny! But both you and Eric are throwing me a curve with preference for #1 (more phalluses are better? ;) ) I am torn between the two, probably like #2 better. Do you and Eric have a reason for your preference? Or do you just like ;) that old thread? LOL...and thanks!

I'm for #2 too. Less clutter.

I think I would prefer #2 if you cropped (sorry, Russ) a tiny bit off the right edge, so the right-most big rock is just complete.

I do.
Compositionally, #1 is better balanced. #2 has two halves, rocks on the right and emptiness on the left (well, apart from the sky). The concentration of elements on the right causes that imbalance.
As for the black sky: I do not mind it in general, however, here it is inconsistent with the rest of the image, which lacks similarly heavy blacks, at least for some parts. It makes the rest of the image cutout-like.
