Title: Oooh, another Ilford GFS annoyance!
Post by: neile on March 24, 2013, 09:30:33 pm
'Cause bashing Ilford's GFS changes appears to be our new favourite pastime, here's a scan of another annoyance:

I am so glad I didn't mount this to my $70 piece of Plywerk. I've been living with the print on my viewing board for a week, wondering if it was right. Today some friends came over and one of them immediately said "what's that yellow rectangle"? I looked, and sure enough. GIANT YELLOW RECTANGLE.

It's from the sticker used to hold on the brown wrapping paper that keeps the roll tightly wound in the box. I'd opened a brand new roll for the print to ensure I didn't have any end-of-roll curl problems. Instead I got a giant yellow rectangle.

Sigh. At least the print had other issues, my fault, that meant reprinting anyway.

That's a real shame. And even Nix Silver Efex Pro can't fix that.

I've seen this in the past but not for more than a year. This showed up on prints that had been left out like yours for just about a week, but pinned to a wall. They were quite obvious once they were noticed and at the time I could not recall seeing the yellow rectangles in the first days after the print was made, so I assumed it was brought about by being exposed to something in the air or coming out of the wall they were pinned to. Some of them were from a fair way into a roll though I think and so I never made the connection with the tape on the wrap paper.

Ugh, I don't like hearing that you saw it far into the roll. I just did the final version of the print and mounted it. Since doing the first print I've done another, uh, 3' into the roll. I hope that's far enough.

I am fascinated by the fact that it took so long to show up, and also that I had to actually step back from my monitor to really see the rectangle.  You are so fortunate you didn't just send the print out to a customer!  --Barbara

It's been too long since this happened, so I'm uncertain now as to whether or not the prints came from the beginning of the roll. From memory though, I didn't make the association at the time that they might be from the wrap tape.
