Out and about the other day hoping to find a few magnolia in flower. The local garden which I frequent for this had been hit by the frost
which meant the magnolia buds and flowers will not be out for this year. We are having late snow and unusually cold weather for us.
So as a person with a camera does we look for other subjects.

Botanical photographs are tough, in my experience: a flurry of details, lines, textures. These are outstanding in their clarity and impact. #2 is exquisite and original. Nice robin, too. Thanks for posting.

Two is tops! Very nicely executed.

Thanks Chris and Scott

Great series.
I love the way you took something as drab as a pile of dead leaves and turned it into an attractive image. That takes skill.

I keep coming back to this post to look. Very nice work!

On the first image did you do any after post-processing vignetting? Like the image, but am just curious.
Thanks.

The second one is remarkable! Great work!
Thanks for sharing.

I can only agree, image #2 is outstanding.
Bravo!

Slim I always post process. It is pretty much what one would have done in a darkroom. Dodge, burn and so on. On that particular photo I used a gradient form the bottom. Essentially I tend to use the techniques to draw the eye and use the light as I was taught to paint. Subject matter I take as unimportant in lots of what i do. What does matter is the light and how it reacts with the subject.
Having said I post always post process, this is because I always turn of such devices as sharpening, noise reduction and so on, with the attempt to get a flat raw file which is more about luminance and DR ( Not correct exposure but an exposure for the subject) This gives the ability to put ones own idea on the processing rather than the camera manufacturers idea of what is good. Each raw file I believe needs to be treated as different from every other and given its own individual interpretation. I have only just started to get the hang of digital after a few years, so have a lot to learn.
Thanks to all for the kind words.

Beautiful images Julian...especially 2

Wow! You have some great pictures. # 4 and 5 fail to catch my attention, but that might not be the same for all viewers.

The 2nd image and the bird image are my favorites :)
