Title: Understanding MTF figures
Post by: NigelC on March 13, 2013, 12:22:12 pm
In assessing whether in moving from Canon FF to Fuji X I will lose/gain/be in about the same place in image quality, I've been looking at Photozone test results, specifically to see how the Fuji lenses compare to Zeiss 21, 28, 35/2, Canon 100 IS and 70-200 F4 IS. For example from test reports you would think that the Fuji 14mm should be a match for the Zeiss 21mm, but the numbers peak well below 3000 whereas the Z21 peaks at over 3500. Broadly the same applies across the focal length range. I had been thinking about an XE1 with 14mm and 60mm lenses and an X100s with its 23mm - possibly also 35/1.4

I'm quite keen to do this for all sorts of reasons but there is a discontinuity between anecdotal descriptions and the numbers - have Photozone got it wrong or does the fact that the Fuji sensor is smaller have a bearing?

F14 was tested on 16mp sensor and Z21 was tested on a different sensor w/ 21mp 5DmkII

test F14 on a higher MP sensor and you will face different LW/PH limits or test Z21 on 12mp 5D

Thanks - that's what I suspected
