Use banner if you want to print a sequence of images without a border/margin between them, or less than the minimum border between them, when using single image print software like Photoshop. If you are using a program which will allow laying out several image as a job, like Lightroom, then you may have little need for banner, unless you need to keep the job size down.

On my small R3000, the banner designation allows me to check a block that minimizes media waste.  Thats the only difference i could find.
