Title: Problems installing ColorMunki Display 1.0.2 software - installer loops for ever
Post by: Simon Garrett on January 16, 2013, 08:26:26 am
I've used the ColorMunki Display for a while, but after rebuiling my machine, the software won't install.  Or rather, it loads the main software, then loops indefinitely installing the driver multiple times.

If I stop it and check the System Restore, it shows multiple restore points for multiple installations of the driver.  At that point the software appears to work with Nvidia drivers 306.97 build, but blue-screens in nvlddmkm.sys with the latest build 310.70 Nvidia build.  I've also tried the earlier xrite 1.0.1 software - same thing.

System is W7 64-bit Nvidia Geforce GTX 550 Ti.

The ColorMunki unit is working fine: I can use Argyll s/w and HCFR s/w.  Before the Windows reload, everything worked fine, but I hadn't had to install the xrite software since Dec 2011 (when I was using a different Nvidia graphics card, probably with 285.62 software build).

Anyone else had any problems installing xrite software?

Most likely you have a conflict between the CM driver for Argyll and the driver for the CM display software. You can only use one of them. The other has to be completely removed.

Thanks for your reply.

That would certainly be the case with many devices.  I remember I had to switch drivers with the Eye One Display 2.

However the ColorMunki Display is used without a specific driver for both Argyll and HCFR.  It appears (in Windows device manager) as a "USB Input Device" under "Human Interface Devices" without any driver installed.  I currently have no driver installed for the ColorMunki Display.

In my previous W7 build, I could freely use Argyll or the Xrite software for the ColorMunki Display without switching driver (although I had to stop the Xrite tray before Argyll could access the device).

The xrite software does have its own driver, but I'm having difficulty installing it since I rebuilt Windows 7.  The installer loops, apparently loading the driver over and over again until you kill the installer, creating a system restore point each time.  It does actually work, provided I let it install the driver at least once before killing the installer, but I don't want to trust software where the installer clearly has a problem.  For now, I'll stick to Argyll.

Hi Simon,

My experiece was with the CMPhoto, so may be different. Nevertheless you may want to check the contents of \windows\system32\Driverstore for (conflicting) references to Colormunki, Xrite and or Argyll (and likewise for \windows\system32\drivers. You also may want to check via controlpannel: system - hardware wether the Colormunki device is listed under Xrite or Argyll.

I am still in the process of getting up to speed with Argyll, but first impression is that it is far superior to Xrite by offering many more relevant choices and much higher achievable quality, provided one comes to grabs with the doe's and dont's.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I can't find any evidence of another driver (and I've not loaded any).  Nothing visible in device manager, and I can't find any reference to xrite or munki in the registry.

I agree with your comments about Argyll.  For the time being, I'll stick to that.

Thanks again both for suggestions.
