If you are talking about autochromes then Albert Kahn (http://www.albertkahn.co.uk/index.html) is the man you should seek. Not a photographer but a great philanthropist and responsible for the creation of some remarkable images.

Yes you're right, and his name rang a small bell. I think I saw some of the TV series. Fantastic shots...it's funny how colour makes the past look so different to the black and white one we all know so well.
