Bringing an iPad and external HD seems a lot easier than bringing a larger MacBook Pro when traveling with its larger charger.
I see that iPad 3 also has a SD reader-lightning and lightning-USB connectors available. Is there a way or app (similar to LR) for the iPad 3 that allows it to catalog/transfer pictures onto an external HD? I was thinking first transfer the photos from SD to the iPad, then download from the iPad to the external HDD.

Yes, it can be done. Syl Arena does it. He uses a Seagate wireless HD. I've asked him the process but he never responded.

Here is one solution:

from the web page:
Upload and back up full-resolution photos and video from your tablet or smartphone - no extra cables needed.

Hadn't seen that one before. I was only aware of their GoFlex Satellite wifi drive, http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/wireless/seagate-satellite/.
Patriot has one as well, the enclosure can work with up to 2tb drives, http://www.patriotmemory.com/product/detail.jsp?prodline=6&catid=43&prodgroupid=237&id=1274&type=19.
Those are the only ones I'm aware of that can act as their own hotspot.
