Click here. (http://archive.org/search.php?query=photography%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts)
This is a good place to start, read the first chapter titled "The Thing That Really Matters" (http://archive.org/stream/outdoorphotograp00dimo#page/n0/mode/2up) yes these are mostly old books on photography, but none the less full of photographic wisdom.
Enjoy!

Interesting.
Take a while to get through though!

The site also contains video (such as "The Photographer" (http://archive.org/details/gov.archives.arc.46998) by Edward Weston) and audio texts and a whole load of other interesting stuff.

It's great that there are things which are free, but a link to nearly 2,000 articles chosen just for their inclusion of the word "photography" (but not photo, picture, image, camera....) in the title seems a bit general. Far better than 2,000 would be a list of the 20 books that YOU find really worthwhile to read.
(this is probably a good time to point out that I haven't read enough about photos yet to put together my own top-20 book list)

You can never have enough books on photography, so you will need to make plenty of room for at least a couple of hundred books or so over the coming years, but my tip for a good place to start and a damn good read, would be - 'Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Galen-Rowells-Inner-Outdoor-Photography/dp/0393338088/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357678235&sr=8-1).

Galen may be dead but that is a fantastic read.
I thoroughly endorse this book - the fact that some of the technical information contained therein details information specific to film changes nought.

Thanks for the recommendation Dave and Tony. I have placed an order for a (used) copy of his book, and am looking forward to reading it.
