Title: balanced?
Post by: Wim van Velzen on December 24, 2012, 10:20:30 am
Even now my camera doesn't shoot square anymore (digital back now), I do like to get some squares out of the captures.

This is one of them. I am not sure though whether it is well balanced or just too much sky. I kind of like it. Let me know what you think!

Location by the way is on top of Dun I, isle of Iona, Scotland. The view is North to the Treshnish isles.

Hi Wim,

I like the shot, it is a very sunny and pleasant scene to look at, it is also from my area of the world (sort of) and I like the bright yet pastel tones.

I know I will upset the crop cops here, but I have taken the liberty of cropping your square format to what I think is a more satisfying image (to me at least). I really like the sky and the foreground rocks etc, but the far distant islands feel too thin in the shot and need to be brought forward into the scene a little, I feel that cropping into the shot in this way seems to do this, albeit only slightly, but none the less makes the distant islands more of a feature of the shot I think.

A nice sunny day on the islands and highlands, does it get any better? I don't think so  :)

I love square format; I still miss shooting with my SQ-a. But in this case I feel like the horizon is just too centered in the frame for my taste.

I like the square-crop version a lot. It gives  some breathing room by including a large sky portion. I also like Dave's version but for me it's not the same image (not that I prefer Wim's or Dave's version over the other).

Thanks fot the input!

I can see the point of the crop, but I'd rather not loose the patches of blue sky higher up. On the other hand, the sky as a whole is may be too weak compared to the rocks.

Well, there is no definite conclusion.  ;D

The Square wins. Perfect!
