Title: Velvet textured paper?
Post by: hugowolf on December 13, 2012, 09:13:06 pm
I am looking for a paper with a surface like Epson Velvet Fine Art. I am looking at Moab Enhanced Velvet. Are there any other papers available in the US with a similar surface, preferably less white and around 300 g/m².

It seems that most if not all of the lightly textured cotton papers are made by St Cuthbert’s Mill in Somerset, England. Are there any with less OBA content?

the hot press version is smooth but velvet like

I use the whole range of the Hot and Cold press papers by Epson, for fine art repro and photos, and they are very nice!

There are more if you look beyond the cotton qualities; Innova IFA15, Olmec 66 and the former Lumijet White Velvet 270 grams that is now Hahnemühle White Etching 270 grams but is sold too with other brand labels.

Have you tried using the Somerset velvet from Epson? Seen a lot of happy people with that one.

Hello,

as far as I remember, exactly Somerset Velvet is discussed and compared to different RC paper  in the first From Camera to Print video by Michael.

I have the sample pack. Unfortunately I don't really like the hot and cold pressed Epson papers. I don't know what it is about them, it is hard to pin it down.

I find cotton sells better, but thanks for the info. I may look at them anyway.

I would be happy with it but it is only 255 g/m² in rolls. The 505 g/m² sheets are heavier than I need, but I may give them a try. Just wish they were 24 x 36 inches instead of 24 x 30 inches - can't store 36 x 44 inch sheets.

Thanks, I will look at it; I have an A4 and US letter sized box of samples from them.

It's my favourite matte paper. See my write-up on it at http://www.danecreek.com/blog/2010/07/08/moab-somerset-museum-rag-paper-review.html

I would certainly not describe Hot Press as "velvet like."  The surface is very smooth and virtually disappears once it has been printed on.  That is one of the qualities that I most like about it.  Cold Press has a more textured surface.

Here are the velvet papers that we carry.
Canon Fine Art Enhanced Velvet
Epson Somerset Velvet
Epson Velvet Fine Art
Moab Somerset Enhanced Velvet

Epson Cold Press is more of a textured (watercolor) based paper.  Hot Press is more of a thicker Matte paper.

There are a few other papers that may have the velvet look.  Most of these papers come in both rolls and sheets.
